Rio, Sinosteel extend JV

[miningmx.com] — RIO Tinto and Sinosteel have extended their Channar iron ore joint venture in Australia to produce a further 50 million tonnes of ore, Rio Tinto said.

The original agreement for the production of 200 million tonnes of ore from deposits in west Australia’s Pilbara region was signed in 1987. Rio holds 60% and Sinosteel the rest.

The joint venture is running at an operating rate of 10 million tonnes a year, Rio said.
