[miningmx.com] – JULIUS Malema, president of the ANC Youth League,
has been expelled from the ANC following an appeal hearing which found he had
“reneged on his membership oath”.
Malema caused ructions in the South African and international mining industry by
pressing for the nationalisation of the country’s mines. It is thought the uncertainty
caused by Malema’s repeated call for nationalisation hurt the South African mining
industry’s standing in international markets despite denials from government that it
was ever a policy.
Derek Hanekom, chairman of the ANC’s national disciplinary committee, made the
announcement on Wednesday night after hearing Malema’s appeal of a conviction last
year in which Malema was found guilty of bringing the ANC into disrepute and sowing
division.
“Comrade Julius Malema is expelled from the ANC,” the committee said in a
statement.
The committee found Malema had “reneg(ed) on his membership oath and (was) not
prepared to respect the ANC constitution”. It also believed he was not prepared to
accept the findings of the disciplinary process.
“With regard to comrade Malema’s plea not to have his membership taken away, the
committee believes that any period of suspension imposed as a sanction would not, as
the complainant’s representative submitted, achieve the purpose of rehabilitating the
comrade,” it said.
