Former Anglo boss Cutifani joins Northern Star

Mark Cutifani

AUSTRALIA’S Northern Star Resources has appointed former Anglo American CEO Mark Cutifani to its board, Bloomberg reported.

Cutifani and mining engineer Peter Rozenauers will join as non-executive directors from October 1, Northern Star said on Monday.

Both were among six board candidates put forward by Elliott in August.

The appointments come after Elliott disclosed in June that it had built a stake worth more than A$1bn in Northern Star. The activist investor has called for a strategic review of the miner, including a possible sale.

Northern Star has cut its production guidance several times over the past year. Problems at its Kalgoorlie processing plant in Western Australia have hit output and weighed on its performance against peers.

The miner has also changed its leadership. In July, it named Glencore executive Suresh Vadnagra as its next CEO. He will replace Stuart Tonkin on October 5.

Cutifani’s appointment follows his resignation from the board of Australian oil and gas producer Woodside Energy. Woodside said on Monday that he had stepped down as a non-executive director on September 13 for personal reasons.

Cutifani led Anglo American from 2013 until 2022 and has held senior roles across the global mining industry.

Northern Star shares gained as much as 3.4% in Sydney on Monday.
