[miningmx.com] – A STRIKE involving 12,000 employees at Gold Fields’ KDC East mine on South Africa’s West Rand has ended with workers having agreed to restart operations from the September 5 night shift, the company said.
“While we cannot condone the unlawful nature of the strike, and will implement the no work, no pay and no dismissal principle, we are pleased with the peaceful manner in which our employees conducted the strike,” said Nick Holland, CEO of Gold Fields.
Holland commended the work of National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) president Senzeni Zokwana and the union’s general-secretary, Frans Baleni.
The strike, which started on August 29, was ended after the national leadership of NUM met with NUM members on the mine to resolve differences between them and office bearers of the local NUM branch, Gold Fields said.
