
[miningmx.com] — THE death toll following a DRDGOLD bus accident on the R501 in Doornfontein, near Carletonville, on Friday morning rose to eight.
Spokesman James Duncan said: “The families of the eight have not been identified yet, the process is on track and the next of kin will be notified as soon as possible.”
According to the information available, those injured in the accident numbered 38.
National Union of Mineworkers’ spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said the eight dead were all mineworkers.
The bus was operated by a transport company contracted by the mine, and was transporting day workers to their shift from the mine’s hostel.
“The injured and the dead were found by medics scattered about the wreckage …,” said Netcare 911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks.
The injured were taken to various hospitals. The cause of the accident was not known.
