Mining Lekgotla planned for June

[miningmx.com] — ROLEPLAYERS in the mining industry, labour and government have announced the staging of a Mining Lekgotla in June to put their heads together on the sector’s future challenges.

The Chamber of Mines, National Union of Mineworkers and the Department of Mineral Resources will co-host the event to be held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand on June 4 and 5.

“The fundamental objective of the Mining Lekgotla is to create opportunities for South African mining industry leadership, including organised labour and policy makers, to identify and confront such key issues as competitiveness, key risks, social pressures and growth opportunities,’ said Chamber of Mines CEO Bheki Sibiya.

The issues around which the two-day programme will focus include: options for nationalisation; acid mine drainage; beneficiation opportunities, priorities and other options; learning about key cross cutting dynamics in the industry; leveraging on the Brics partnerships; globalisation; carbon taxes and related environmental issues and health and safety challenges.

“It will be a meeting of South Africans putting South Africa first by developing thought leadership required to build the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values for a future sustainable mining industry,’ Sibiya said.
