Majali death certificate awaited

[miningmx.com] — The National Prosecuting Authority was awaiting the death certificate of late businessman Sandile Majali in order to withdraw charges against him, an official said on Tuesday.

“We will withdraw the case against him on the receipt of a valid death certificate. We have not yet received the certificate,” NPA spokesperson Advocate Mthunzi Mhaga said.

This would be done on January 18 in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

Majali, Haralambos Sferopoulous, Stephan Khoza and Elvis Bongani Ndala were arrested in October for allegedly changing the directorship of mining company Kalahari Resources in August last year.

The 48-year-old Majali was found dead in his room at the Sandton Quatermain Hotel in Johannesburg on December 26.

Police were waiting for tests to be conducted on medication found in the hotel room where the body was found.

The case of his co-accused was postponed to February 1 when a psychiatric report on Sferopoulous would be presented to the court.

At the last appearance, the court ordered, on the State’s request, that Majali’s three co-accused be sent for mental observation.

Khoza was found to be unfit to stand trial.
