[miningmx.com] — The issue of the nationalisation of SA’s mining sector will only be decided at the African National Congress’s (ANC’s) policy conference in 2012, according to Deputy Mineral Resources Minister Godfrey Oliphant.
Speaking to I-Net Bridge/BusinessLIVE at the Diamond Producers Association concerence in Cape Town on Friday, Oliphant said: “Those who are pro-nationalisation must lobby and put forward their views and those who are anti-nationalisation must lobby and also make a noise.”
After Thursday’s state of the nation address, ANC Youth League president Julius Malema criticised Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu’s anti-nationalisation stance.
“Nationalisation is here to stay,” Malema said.
Oliphant said that nationalisation was neither the ANC’s nor the government’s policy.
He also said that it was a continuing debate and that research was still being conducted.
