Northam strike continues with no end in sight

[miningmx.com] — The National Union of Mineworkers on Wednesday said a strike by over 8 000 workers at Northam Platinum had entered its third day with “no resolution in sight”.

The trade union is demanding that the company increase workers’ wages by 15% as well as offer them a living out allowance of R3 500 per month, while Northam is offering an 8% wage increase as part of a two-year agreement.

The strike, which started on Sunday, has shut down Northam’s Zondereinde mine in Limpopo.

Northam has said it is losing 1 000 ounces a day due to the strike.

“There has not been any talks to resolve the impasse, and it is likely that this strike action will take many months to resolve,” warned the NUM’s chief negotiator at Northam, Zwelitsha Tantsi.
