[miningmx.com] — The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Monday striking workers at Northam Platinum are expected to return to work on Tuesday following a revised pay rise offer from the company.
“We have agreed with the members to call off the strike now,” NUM’s chief negotiator at Northam, Zwelitsha Tantsi, told Reuters.
Northam spokeswoman Marion Brower said the parties agreed to increases ranging between 10% and 11% and an increase of 12.5% of living out allowance.
NUM was demanding a 15% increase and a monthly housing allowance of R3,500.
The workers had earlier rejected the Northam’s offer of a 9.5% rise and a housing allowance of R1,750.
Workers went on strike for six weeks, which resulted in revenue losses of approximately R380m, Brower said.
“Operations are expected to resume on Tuesday… initially focusing on re-establishing safe underground working areas which may have deteriorated during the stoppage.”
