Amplats workers on strike

[miningmx] — ANGLO American Platinum (Amplats) said on Friday around 100
employees at its Thembelani Mine in Rustenburg refused to go underground during
the morning shift change.

The company issued a statement saying the workers demanded to speak to
management regarding a memorandum handed over last week Friday.

“On initial engagement, the workers have agreed to select six people to represent
them in the talks with management,’ the statement read. “The talks are currently
happening between the six representatives, management and members of UASA,
and NUM are part of the discussions.’

Amplats said the rest of its workforce went underground for work, and that the
situation was calm.

“We appeal to our workers to remain calm and to refrain from violent acts during
this period,’ the group said.

UPDATE: Amplats reported at later on Friday that the striking employees have
agreed to return to work.
