Anglo Platinum facing strike action

[miningmx.com] — MORE strikes are on the horizon, this time in the platinum sector, as the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Thursday it had rejected an offer of a 4.6% wage increase from world number one platinum producer Anglo Platinum.

The trade union is seeking a 14% increase in pay from the mining industry.

“NUM took a decision not to continue with talks with the company tomorrow and to proceed with consultation with members to ask for a mandate for strike action,” the trade union said.

It added that it was “highly disappointed” by the company’s offer.

South Africa’s gold industry is already facing a strike after negotiations faltered earlier this week.

The coal sector could also be hit, with three trade unions on Thursday declaring a dispute with coal mining companies over wages.
