Grindrod signs rail deal with Zambia

[miningmx.com] – GRINDROD, a Johannesburg-listed logistics and shipping company, has signed an agreement to build a railway connecting mines in Zambia owned by Barrick Gold and First Quantum Minerals, said Bloomberg News.

The $989m project will also link First Quantum Minerals, Africa’s largest copper producer, to the Angolan border. The contract, which is with Zambia’s Northwest Rail, should start this year, said Bloomberg News.

“I have been developing this project for a number of years and the synergies with Grindrod’s rail businesses makes Grindrod an ideal partner in the joint venture,’ Enoch Kavindele, Northwest Rail’s founder, said in the statement.
