NUMSA emboldened by AMCU ‘success’

[miningmx.com] – THE perception that the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) won out following a five month strike in the platinum sector would harden attitudes among leaders of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) which took 220,000 members out on strike on July 1.

“The perception out there will be that they [AMCU] did very, very well,’ Andrew Levy, a labour relations consultant told Bloomberg News. “It’s going to harden attitudes.’

Earlier this week, NUMSA general-secretary, Irvin Jim, said there was collusion between the state and the private sector to maintain the status quo economically. “They can’t relate to the debate we’re talking about because they’re stinking rich,’ he said.
