BHP Spinco may attract predators

[miningmx.com] – THE company BHP Billiton proposes to unbundle and list in Perth and Johannesburg would attract predators, said Bloomberg News citing analysts who added that the firm was well positioned to benefit from a metal price recovery.

“They’re spinning out assets for the most part in commodities where people are expecting a rebound in pricing,’ Peter Mallin-Jones, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity told Bloomberg News. “If there is some form of recovery in prices like aluminum, nickel, they ought to do OK,’ he said.

Glencore and the privately-held X2 Resources may consider bidding for some of the assets once listed, said James Wilson, an analyst at Morgans Financial in Perth.

“Glencore couldn’t take a part of BHP right now if they wanted to, but if you spin the assets out into another vehicle that’s smaller, and less problematic from a regulatory perspective, you could take them out then,’ Wilson said.
