Army seizes power in Burkina Faso

[miningmx.com] – THE army had seized power in Burkina Faso, the fifth largest gold producer in sub-Saharan Africa, following several days of protests in which the removal of the country’s president, Blaise Compaore, was demanded.

The army has dissolved all the country’s institutions, and planned to appoint a new head of state before restoring the constitution in 12 months, said Bloomberg News citing comments made to reporters by Colonel Aboubacar Ba.

Shares in Iamgold Corporation and Semafo, both listed in Toronto, plunged on the news of the coup. The situation of Compaore wasn’t clear after he initially said he would oversee a period of transition.
