Numsa explusion “a disaster”: Vavi

[miningmx.com] – CONGRESS of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) secretary-general, Zwelinzima Vavi, described the expulsion of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has “a disaster” and “a game-changer”.

Commenting on social media following the November 8 expulsion of Numsa, BDLive cited Vavi as saying in a post on Twitter: “”The guillotine of 350,000 workers is a game-changer and will have profound political and organisational implications. What is to be done?” he said.

The expulsion comes after Numsa withdrew its support for the ANC four months before May 7 national elections, in which the ANC won with a reduced majority of 62%.

“The clearest economic implications are that union rivalries will continue to drive labor instability, especially in metalwork, mining and construction; and the upcoming public-sector wage negotiations will be more difficult for the government,’ Mark Rosenberg, an analyst with Eurasia Group said in a note quoted by Bloomberg News.

“In the longer run, a divided labour movement is positive for labour reform,’ Rosenberg said.
