Botswana budget surplus to widen

[miningmx.com] – BOTSWANA is expected to report a budget surplus of $125m or 0.8% of gross domestic product, said Bloomberg News citing comments by the country’s finance minister Kenneth Matambo.

“This modest surplus will contribute to rebuilding the country’s net financial assets and provide a cushion against future financial shocks such as happened during the global financial crisis,’ Matambo said in his budget speech on February 2.

The surplus comes amid a slow-down in diamond sales which is a major driver of Botswana’s economy and helps bolster the second term of President Ian Khama who was returned to power in October.
