
[miningmx.com] – ASSMANG is one of four mining companies operating in South Africa’s Northern Cape province that is planning to cut 1,031 jobs, said Bloomberg News citing a statement last night from the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
“We were told of this over the past three days,’ Lucas Phiri, regional coordinator for the union, told the NUM. Employers, which also includes Rockwell Diamonds, cited commodity prices and profitability in making the cuts, he said.
The companies have served notice of the workforce reduction under the Labour Relations Act, which makes provision for 60 days of talks over the cuts, the union said.
