Bloomberg donates $30m to reducing coal use

[miningmx.com] – NEW York major, Michael Bloomberg, has contributed $30m through his charitable organisation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, in order to help halve the number of coal plants in the US, said Energy Matters.

“Many of coal’s defenders refer to these efforts as a “war on coal’ — without mentioning the actual death toll. Coal is still killing 7,500 people annually,’ said Bloomberg who was referring to coal-attributed deaths in the US.

Bloomberg previously donated $50m to the effort, known as Beyond Coal, which is with the 2.4 million member strong Sierra Club, the US’s more influential grassroots environmental organisation, said Energy Matters.

According to the Sierra Club, the partnership has already resulted in 187 coal plants retired or announcing their retirement. Dependence on coal has plunged from 52% of US electricity generation to under 40%; avoiding more than 280 million metric tons of carbon emissions from the electricity generation sector.
