CoAL’s Vele faces new environmental appeal

[miningmx.com] – COAL of Africa (CoAL) said an appeal against its amended environmental assessment for the Vele coal mine in South Africa’s Limpopo province was lodged in April.

The mine, which is currently on care and maintenance whilst it is restructured and expanded, has been the target of environmental lobbyist opposition since construction on its plant started owing to its position near Mapungubwe, an internationally recognised World Heritage site.

David Brown, CEO of CoAL, said in the commentary to the firm’s March quarter figures, that its applications to amend the colliery’s EA to include the plant modifications had been approved by the Department of Environmental Affairs.

He was confident previously submitted applications to amend and renew Vele’s Integrated Water Use Licence would be received in the first half of the 2015. calendar year.
