SA coal sector on brink of strike over wages

[miningmx.com] – THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is to call a strike in South Africa’s coal sector after failing to reach an agreement on wage increases which the union wants hiked R1,000 a month for lowest paid members.

“We have the certificate to strike and will give the companies 48-hour notice later,” Peter Bailey, NUM’s chief negotiator in the coal sector, told Reuters in an article that was republished in BDLive.

The new wage demand for lowest paid workers represented an increase of 13% after initially asking for a 50% lift, said Bailey. Coal producers, meanwhile, had raised their offer up to 8.5% for lowest paid workers from 8% previously.
