
[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress resolved at its national general council meeting on October 11 to urgently end a standoff with the mining sector over black empowerment requirements.
In an article by Bloomberg News, the party also said Eskom should revamp its aging power stations in partnership with the private sector “… while a detailed cost-benefit analysis should be undertaken into the viability of building new nuclear plants”.
The Department of Mineral Resources and the Chamber of Mines are contesting the interpretation of the mining charter in court, specifically the issue of whether past and defunct empowerment deals should still be credited to mining companies.
