[miningmx.com] – BRIAN Molefe, CEO of Transnet, said the state-owned transport utility would press ahead with building its own 10 million tonne/year (mtpa) to 15mtpa coal export terminal, and questioned claims by Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) that it had a capacity of 91mtpa.
“This capacity is mythical,’ Molefe told Bloomberg News. “Nobody can say with absolute certainty that they have 91mt of capacity. They allocated only 4mt for about 21 small miners, who are saying that’s not enough,’ said Molefe.
RBCT argues that it has at least 20mtpa of unused capacity at its terminal and that its plans to build capacity to 110mtpa ought to be combined with Transnet’s own ambitions which would be cheaper to build than a greenfields project.
