Platinum producers may mothball mines

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s platinum producers may consider mothballing mines affected by the wage strike, now in its 20th week, after talks to find an agreement failed last night, said BDLive. It didn’t provide more details.

BDLive also quoted Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) president, Joseph Mathunjwa, as saying that he would return to workers to review the mandate in the wake of the failure to find an agreement.

An Inter-Governmental Task Team, led by mines minister, Ngoako Ramatlhodi, was dissolved after failing to find a middle ground in the wage deadlock which mining firms offering a 9% increase while AMCU has called for a 30% plus increase.

Mathunjwa told BDLive talks had been “cordial” and that there were avenues still open to the negotiators. He added that AMCU had made many concessions in the negotiation process.
