Iamgold says Burkina Faso mine not hit by unrest

[miningmx.com] — MID-TIER gold miner Iamgold said on Monday that operations at its Essakane mine in Burkina Faso were not affected by riots in the southern part of the West African nation.

On Friday, president Blaise Compaore sacked his government, army chief and head of presidential security after soldiers took to the street demanding payment of promised bonuses, sparking riots.

Iamgold holds a 90% stake in the Essakane gold mine, some 500 kilometers northeast of the capital of Ouagadougou.

“We have not had any disruption to the Essakane operation. We have had no interruptions to our supply chain,” said Iamgold CEO Steve Letwin in a release. “It is business as usual.”

Essakane produces around 315,000 ounces of gold a year. The Toronto-based miner also has mines in Canada, South America and elsewhere in Africa.
