Mineworker dies at Lonmin’s Rowland shaft

[miningmx.com] — The National Union of Mineworkers (Num) on Thursday reported the death of a mineworker at Lonmin’s Rowland shaft outside Rustenburg.

“The mineworker, a female operator of a locomotive was found under the locomotive at a ventilation door,” the Num said in a statement.

While the trade union has called for a thorough investigation into the accident, it
said it appreciated that the company had come forward to report the fatality “rather
than try to hide the accident as it usually happens with other mining houses”.

“The Num reiterates its call for the mining industry to seriously work towards zero
fatalities in deeds rather than through lip service,” it said.
