Impala confirms work stoppage at its 12 Shaft

[miningmx.com] — Impala Platium Holdings, the world’s second largest platinum producer, on Friday confirmed a work stoppage at the company’s 12 Shaft operation in Rustenburg.

The company said the stoppage was limited to a small group of maintenance
employees who have embarked on a strike relating to a pay issue.

“Operations in Rustenburg are unaffected and management continues to engage with the union and employees to resolve the dispute,” Implats said. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Friday said 50 artisans had downed tools at Implats as they embarked on strike action over pay discrepancy between black and white artisans.

“The workers believe the manner in which other artisans are paid is based on race rather than experience as the company claims,” said NUM Impala Platinum Mining coordinator Simon Rasogo.

The NUM called for Implats to rectify the situation before Tuesday next week,
saying failure to do so would result in a secondary strike across all Implats operations.

“A massive strike action will be rolled out across all Impala operations which will
see all our 22 000 members joining the strike, because an injury to one is an injury to all,” said Rasoga.
