NUM registers shock with Amplats sales

[miningmx.com] – THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) registered its shock at plans by Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) to sell its mines in Rustenburg and exit other joint ventures saying it would lead to job losses.

“Any sale is going to result in job losses and this is punishment for poor workers,” NUM general secretary Frans Baleni told Reuters in an article subsequently republished by Fin24. “They are an established platinum operator and any sale will have certain consequences,” said Baleni.

Amplats CEO, Chris Griffith, said at the group’s interim results presentation today that the group was keenly aware of the potential effect on employees, adding that: “We don’t have to rush out there. It’s not a fire sale”.
