
[miningmx.com] – THE South African government would press on with plans to make nuclear power a major part of the country’s energy mix despite warnings in the centrepiece National Development Plan (NDP) about its expense.
Citing energy minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson, BDLive said in a report today that the government believed installling nuclear energy would catapult South Africa into “the top echelons of the knowledge economy.
Joematt-Pettersson said in her budget speech on July 21 that “nuclear expansion option is a central feature in our future energy mix”. According to some estimates, the cost of installing nuclear energy would be about R1 trillion and push up the cost of electricity.
