Radebe reminds miners of national patrimony

[miningmx.com] – MINISTER in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe, reminded mining companies operating in South Africa that the country’s minerals belong to the people and that mining had to therefore benefit the nation.

In an article by Sapa, and republished in Business Report, Radebe said: “The dividend of mining minerals must ultimately accrue to the whole economy and by extension to the people as a whole’. Radebe was speaking at the gala dinner of the Mining Lekgotla on August 13.

Radebe added that not all industry players had stuck to the letter and spirit of the mining charter, but that it wouldn’t help to point fingers.

Mining companies have until the year-end to comply with the mining charter, the conditions of which carried a 10-year deadline when first written in 2004.
