[miningmx.com] – COSATU general-secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, said he could not condone his organisation’s decision to expel its largest union member, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa.
In an article by Bloomberg News, Vavi is quoted as saying in a letter to Cosatu officials: “I will not be able to defend a decision that I honestly believe is contradicting and undermining organized workers and broader working class unity, a decision that will have momentous implications for years to come”.
Cosatu, which sent against the wishes of the ANC in expelling Numsa, took its decision because Numsa would not support the ANC in national elections earlier this year.
Numsa is considering forming a new political party that would challenge the ANC in municipal elections in 2016, said Bloomberg News.
