[miningmx.com] – SOUTH African business is to ask its government to postpone signing tenders for the building of nuclear power saying there are immediate energy challenges that need to be tackled first, said BDLive.
Citing a document compiled by Business Unity South Africa (Busa), BDLive said business wanted government’s energy department to stick by the recommendations of the country’s National Development Plan which said nuclear power was too expensive.
“In this context, we are concerned at reports indicating that decisions on extremely expensive technology options (such as nuclear) are about to be made,” reported BDLive citing the document, handed to energy minister, Tina Joematt-Pettersson.
“Given the decline in demand, we support the position taken in the NDP (National Development Plan), that nuclear decisions can be moved forward into the future, while shorter-term supply-side options are expedited,” said the paper.
A meeting between Busa and the South African government has been secured for a date next month, said BDLive.
