[miningmx.com] – GLENCORE said it welcomed a decision on November 19 by South Africa’s Labour Court to grant the firm an interim interdict against plans by the National Union of Mineworkers to stage a secondary strike at Optimum Coal Mine.
The applicaiton by the NUM is aimed at building support for strike action at Koornfontein where restructuring is underway. Union members contend that separation packages are not comparable with benefits given to other miners in the group.
“Glencore will participate in the review process by the CCMA as directed by the Court to seek a lasting solution to this as well as the ongoing strike action at its Koornfontein Operation,” said the company’s spokesman Gugulethu Maqetuka.
