Zambia power surplus being diminished

[miningmx.com] – MINING expansions in Zambia will eat into the country’s power surplus next year, said Bloomberg News which cited Cyprian Chitundu, MD of the state-owned power utility, Zesco.

Chitundu told Bloomberg that Zambia will have a “very marginal power supply surplus for next year, but that is being eaten into”. Projects by First Quantum Mineral will take up some of the surplus power demand, said the newswire.

“With Zambian miners increasing capacity over the next few years, grid tightness could worsen if new generation capacity additions are further delayed,’ Patrick Jones, an analyst with Nomura International said in a November 14 note emailed to Bloomberg.
