Ramatlhodi wants to build mining champion

[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa mines minister, Ngoako Ramatlhodi, said he wanted to create a company which had broad empowerment and “one foot” in the community and that would champion the country’s mining assets.

BDLive quoted Ramatlhodi as saying that his ambitions for the company were not those for the state-owned mining company which was a separate matter. He said the company would consist of new and old investors with the latter contributing coal and platinum assets amid their own restructuring plans.

“It’s early stages, but I think the elements are there (for a company with) strong community participation, strong broad-based ownership by black people in South Africa,” Ramatlhodi is quoted to have said.

“And you can’t only start with fresh ones (people new to the sector); you’ve got to include those . who bring experience, knowledge and commitment. Those elements are there in my mind.

“We’re working on it in collaboration with the guys who are pulling out, who are restructuring.”

He mentioned BHP Billiton and Anglo American, “particularly with their coal assets and platinum in Rustenburg and other places”.

Ramatlhodi was speaking in London where he was hoping to win support for the International Geological Congress to be held in South Africa in August, said BDLive.
