Coal sector must be more competitive: Eskom

[miningmx.com] – ESKOM urged South Africa’s coal industry to remain competitive in order to contain costs after it revealed that its primary energy cost was increasing at a compounded 20% a year for the past few years, said BDLive.

“We urge players to ensure our coal industry remains competitive,” said Vusi Mboweni,
acting divisional executive of Eskom’s primary energy division. Mboweni was speaking at the IHS Energy South African Coal Exports Conference 2015.

Coal accounted for about 30% of Eskom’s operating expenditure which was an unsustainable situation, said Mboweni. “If coal prices itself out of the market, other sources of energy become more viable,” he said.
