DRC’s Kabila warned off seeking third term

[miningmx.com] – PARTIES in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have warned president Joseph Kabila that he would weaken the country’s democracy if he sought a third term in office as they suspect he wants to do, said Reuters.

Citing a letter from the leaders of seven political parties in the DRC, Reuters said that there had been “… a split between the ruling majority and the majority of Congo’s society”.

“The presidential majority is unable to make a viable offer to the Congolese people at this stage,” the letter said, adding that “vague efforts to modify the constitution” plus the attempt at electoral reform had stirred popular anger.

Earlier this year, Kabila backed off plans to demand a census before the next national elections in late 2016, a development that led opposition parties to believe he was seeking a third term in office which is currently barred by the country’s constitution.
