
[miningmx.com] – Joseph Mathunjwa, president of the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU), dismissed proposals by Cosatu for a minimum wage as “a gimmick” that masked the inequalities bequeathed by apartheid.
BDLive quoted Mathunjwa as saying that this was “… a worrying time for the labour movement that is under constant attack from our corporatist state”. He was commenting amid discussions between business and labour under the watch of the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac).
“The minimum wage is a populist statement made by Cosatu to avoid dealing with the fundamental challenges in South Africa,” said Mathunjwa.
The national minimum wage masked, rather than dealt head on, with the apartheid wage structure in South Africa, he said.
