SA economy 10% bigger without Eskom woes

[miningmx.com] – THE South African economy could have been 10% larger were it not for the shortage in power, said Bloomberg News citing Dawie Roodt, an economist for the Pretoria-based Efficient Group.

“If we’d had enough electricity since 2007 and it was not a limiting factor, the economy could have been about 10% bigger than it actually was by the end of 2014,’ said Roodt. “That is more than R300bn, or more than a million job opportunities.’

Rolling blackouts have curbed mining and manufacturing, both knocked by strikes that limited 2014 growth to the slowest pace since a 2009 recession, and prompted rating downgrades, said Bloomberg News.
