
[miningmx.com] – IMPALA Platinum and Lonmin had started negotiations with unions regarding closing unprofitable shafts, said Bloomberg News citing the comments of Franz Stehring, head of minority union, UASA.
“We’ve been told they’re looking at the future design of the mines to take the current pay-limits into account,’ Stehring told Bloomberg News. Stehring was referring to each shaft’s profitability, said the newswire. “This is all theoretical still, nothing has been approved,’ he added.
Impala and Lonmin have in the past six months detailed plans to give more focus to their mining plans so that they work at higher margin areas. The anticipation is that this would help retain the majority of jobs.
