US fines BHP $25m in Olympics bribery case

[miningmx.com] – BHP Billiton is to pay $25m after falling foul of a US anti-bribery law that found it had failed to properly monitor a programme under which it paid for dozens of foreign government officals to attend the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Reuters reported that the accord resolves US Securities and Exchange Commission charges that BHP violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act when it sponsored the attendance of officials who were “directly involved with, or in a position to influence’ its business and regulatory affairs, many of them from Africa and Asia.

BHP neither admitted nor denied wrongdoing in agreeing to settle the civil case, said Reuters. The US Department of Justice ended a related criminal probe without taking action, the newswire said.
