New NUM leader Sipunzi concerned by chamber

[miningmx.com] – NEWLY elected general-secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), David Sipunzi, was concerned at the approach adopted by the Chamber of Mines ahead of gold sector wage talks, said BDLive.

In an article in the publication, Sipunzi is quoted as saying: “I am concerned by the CEOs (of mining firms) pleading poverty even before the talks started, yet this does not show in their lifestyles. Not one CEO has shown that they would cut their salaries and bonuses yet they expect workers to accept low wages”.

Sipunzi was elected leader of the NUM by a slight majority at its national congress last week pushing out Frans Baleni who had led the union for nine years.
