[miningmx.com] – THE Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) would return to wage talks with gold mining companies after walking out on the negotiations last week, said Reuters.
AMCU declared a deadlock and was to take the matter to the Commission for Conciliation and Arbitration (CCMA), a step seen as a precursor to strike action – an outcome Jimmy Gama, AMCU’s treasurer said was not a given.
“This deadlock does not imply that AMCU has abandoned the wage negotiations or that it intends to embark on a strike action in the gold sector,” Gama told Reuters.
AMCU has demanded R12,500 for its members while gold producers tabled offers of between 7.8% and 13%, with a guarantee that there would be no retrenchments at mines where operations fell below a 6% operating margin.
