[miningmx.com] – SOUTH Africa’s Chamber of Mines said it was concerned about the difference of opinion regarding membership figures of AMCU in the country’s gold sector, but said it would work to resolve the matter.
The Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union does not believe a membership audit conducted by gold firms AngloGold Ashanti, Harmony Gold and Sibanye Gold as represented by the chamber which gives AMCU some 30% gold industry membership.
It is thought this led to AMCU walking out of wage talks last week.
At 30%, AMCU’s membership in the sector has grown but it still leaves the National Union of Mineworkers as the majority union with 52% which is important because deals reached with the majority are generally imposed on other unions.
“We remain concerned that there appears to be a very real difference in opinion between the companies and AMCU, and it is that which we are seeking to address and resolve,” the Chamber of Mines said.
