Chamber to engage in bilateral wage talks

[miningmx.com] – WAGE negotiations in the South African gold sector continued today with the Chamber of Mines meeting with the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) on its specific demands.

Elize Strydom, the leader negotiator at the chamber, said the talks were constructive and would be followed with bilateral meetings with other unions later this week. The chamber represents AngloGold Ashanti, Harmony Gold, Sibanye Gold , Evander Gold Mines (Pan African Resources) and Village Main Reef.

“Today we met with AMCU as part of the bilateral meeting process, with the companies engaging with the union on their specific demands. Discussions between the parties were constructive and we look forward to further engagement,” said Strydom.

AMCU has demanded R12,500 for its members while gold producers tabled offers of between 7.8% and 13%, with a guarantee that there would be no retrenchments at mines where operations fell below a 6% operating margin.
