Gupta’s Optimum supplying Eskom’s Arnot

[miningmx.com] – ESKOM is sourcing coal for its Arnot power station from a mine bought by the influential Gupta family from Glencore, said Bloomberg News in an article that was republished by BDLive.

According to the newswire, which cited “three people with knowledge of the situation”, Eskom is buying coal from Optimum Coal mine – an operation that the Gupta family bought from Glencore through Tegeta Exploration & Resources, a company since amalgamated with Oakbay Resources & Energy, the Gupta’s listed vehicle.

The Gupta family – consisting of brothers Atul, Rajesh and Ajay – are thought to have ‘undue influence’ over South African president, Jacob Zuma, which critics have described as the capture of political authority.

The coal supplying Arnot power station, from Optimum, is thought to have replaced production from another mine operated by Exxaro Resources, also called Arnot. The Arnot mine was shut after Eskom and Exxaro failed to agree a new coal supply agreement.
