West Rand’s toxic heritage

[miningmx.com] – URANIUM levels in rivers on the gold rich west Rand of Johannesburg are 4,000 times the naturally occurring level, said Bloomberg News which had soil samples tested and sent for laboratory results.

The newswire links the uranium to the long history of gold mining in the region. According to Carl Albrecht, head of research at the Cancer Association of South Africa, or Cansa, there’s nowhere in the world where so many people live next to such a vast amount of ore-bearing uranium.

“There are 400,000 people in the area who are subjected to this environment and yet the government is unwilling to consider the health impact,’ Albrecht told the newswire service.
