
[miningmx.com] – THE South African parliament’s mineral resources committee was considering splitting the Mineral & Petroleum Resources Amendment Bill into separate laws, said BDLive.
Reporting on a debate on whether oil and gas and minerals should be governed by separate laws, BDLive said it was decided to keep the amendment bill in its current form, but recommend a later division in its final report.
Committee chairwoman Faith Bikani said the oil and gas sector was still new in South Africa and needed separate regulations from the mining sector to better manage upstream and downstream processes, said BDLive.
Department of Mineral Resources director-general Thibedi Ramontja disagreed as shale gas occurred with other minerals. “For instance, where you find shale gas in the Karoo you will probably find minerals like uranium.”
