[miningmx.com] – TITO Mboweni stood down from the chairmanship of AngloGold Ashanti yesterday but the move was not preparation for rekindling his political career as speculated yesterday (February 17).
Mboweni told BDLive his decision not to stand for re-appointment to the AngloGold Ashanti board was based on “the need to focus on other things” in his portfolio.
“As a result of his increasing portfolio of professional commitments, Mr Mboweni has decided not to stand for re-election as non-executive director at the annual general meeting to be held in May 2014,” said BDLive.
It had been suggested he was preparing to re-enter politics identifying national elections on May 7 as the perfect opportunity.
“He is a party heavyweight,’ Pierre du Toit, a politics professor at the University of Stellenbosch, near Cape Town, told Bloomberg News.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes a go at a senior cabinet post. Whether he gets it or not is a different matter. There is big competition within the party for those posts,’ said Du Toit.
South African president, Jacob Zuma, called national elections for May 7. Mboweni was labour minister from 1994 to 1999. He will be replaced by Sipho Pityana, a non-executive director of AngloGold Ashanti.
